We now introduce Matt Zekala who has just joined our firm as an associate attorney.

In 1998 Matt left his hometown of New York City and moved to Portland which has been his home ever since. Matt graduated magna cum laude from Portland State University and earned his law degree from Lewis & Clark Law School. While in law school Matt not only held a full time job with a law firm but was also elected Lead Articles Editor for the Lewis & Clark Law Review and wrote a Comment which was published in 2012 entitled Liability and Salvage: Titanic Jurisprudence in United States Federal Court, 16 Lewis & Clark L. Rev. 1075 (2012).  His Comment discussed the litigation generated by the discovery and salvage of what was left of the Titanic from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

Before law school Matt worked for an international management consulting firm in New York City which developed and promoted U.S. business interests in Europe. After moving to Portland Matt helped to oversee 100,000 square feet of industrial and residential property for a real estate investment firm. Between 2001 and 2009 he worked for Dispute Resolution Management, Inc. (DRM), a boutique legal service firm specializing in multi-million dollar environmental insurance settlements for Fortune 500 policyholders. At DRM, Matt participated in every stage of the insurance settlement process – from preparing and making presentations to potential clients through the final negotiations with insurers.

While in law school Matt worked full time as a clerk for a Portland law firm where he dealt with a variety of civil and criminal cases in both state and federal courts including claims of tax fraud, drug trafficking, arms trafficking, environmental violation, conspiracy, bank fraud and political corruption.

During 2014 and 2015 Matt was a temporary Special Assistant Attorney General for the Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ) where he worked with a team of attorneys assigned to help in defending the state against a federal class action.

Matt is also a musician who has performed with various bands throughout his adult life in both New York and Portland. He continues to perform and write music.

In short, Matt is a generalist with a breadth of experience and interests who fits perfectly in our general practice firm.
